Now it could be that I genuinely suck, this is very possible. There is 2 options for survival assist – you get 25% or 50% damage reduction and can thankfully still get achievements.Įven with the survival assist on 25% I was still dying! I had no choice but to turn it on 50% and was able to make it through, though some fights were close. I sadly had to turn on the survival assist option in which clearly states that the game isn’t balanced around using this and I should only use if it I need to. So after smacking my head against the second zone boss for a while, I realized from a stat point that my character skills are not increasing any more. That’s right, they cap you on the upgrades you are allowed to do. I was stuck here for about another 10 deaths before I capped the upgrades. The issue is that the upgrades I found boring and didn’t help with making the game easier.Īfter about ~15 deaths, I was able to beat the first boss and go to the next zone. You use these currencies back at base after dying on permanent boosts, similar to most roguelikes. Each run, you have two types of currency you slowly get. The gameplay loop is a bit boring and repetitive and feeds into the increased difficulty in a negative way. I feel like there’s some missed opportunity here when it comes to trancing with the gameplay like Tetris Effect, City of Beats takes the safe and boring route. The devs had the opportunity to really get wild with what power ups can do and how they relate to the music. I really wish they were more creative here as I feel the power ups don’t really make a huge difference when it comes to gameplay. The mechanics are similar to Slay the Spire in that as you progress, you collect power ups that enhance your abilities. Gameplay (Controls/Mechanics/Loop/Difficulty) – The controls are great and tight, which you need to be for a twin-stick shooter, so no complaints there.
